Social Studies

The social studies program offers students a rich and rigorous exploration of history, government, economics, and the social sciences. Rooted in the New York State curriculum, the program includes required courses in Global and American History, as well as Government and Economics, with opportunities at every grade level for students to choose electives that align with their interests and goals. By studying the past and examining social institutions, students gain a deeper understanding of modern society and the responsibilities of citizenship. The program emphasizes critical thinking, ethical reflection, and meaningful discussion, all aimed at preparing students to thrive in college, the workplace, and the broader world. Ultimately, the Social Studies experience encourages students to reflect on what it means to live thoughtfully and responsibly in a democratic and interconnected society.

"No country can possibly move ahead, no free society can possibly be sustained, unless it has an educated citizenry whose qualities of mind and heart permit it to take part in the complicated and increasingly sophisticated decisions that pour not only upon the President and upon the Congress, but upon all the citizens who exercise the ultimate power-John F. Kennedy

A Message from Chairperson Kristy Faulkner

By studying history and the various social science disciplines, students gain an understanding of our government, social institutions and cultural heritage and how they inform modern society.  Throughout the program, students acquire the skills to become critical thinkers and active citizens in a democratic society and an increasingly interdependent world.

Grade 6 offers a survey of World History and grades 7-8 explore American History.  All grades follow a state mandated curriculum.  Electives are offered in grades 6-8 which strive to link history, literature and ethics in a seminar, discussion  intensive format.

From 9th through 12th grade, courses in Global and American history, government and economics are based on and closely follow the NYS curriculum. At each of the four grade levels students are given options to choose courses that best meet their needs and interests.  Please refer to the flowchart on p.44 of the HS course offering catalog.

It is our sincere hope that every student will benefit from this course of study and be better prepared to meet the challenges of college life and the workplace.  Most important, we hope they will build on what they learned here and continually reflect on what it means to be virtuous and live a good life.
