Chinese

Chinese 2 continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while introducing students to increasingly complex language structures and patterns.

Chinese 2 Honors provides an intensive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students work with more complex syntactical patterns, with increased emphasis on reading and writing.

Chinese 3 advances students' language proficiency with a focus on everyday conversation, pinyin, sounds and tones, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence patterns. Reading and writing skills are reinforced while students explore Chinese culture through art, films, and projects. The course culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

Chinese 3 Honors provides an intensive continuation of Chinese language study, with greater emphasis on complex grammatical concepts, vocabulary, sentence patterns, reading, and writing. Students continue developing conversational skills while exploring Chinese culture through art, films, and projects. The course culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

Chinese 4/4 Honors helps students refine their grammatical skills while placing greater emphasis on reading and writing. Students explore selections from Chinese literature and authentic materials while continuing to strengthen listening and speaking skills. The course prepares students for advanced study in AP Chinese Language and Culture.

AP Chinese Language and Culture/Chinese 5 is equivalent to an intermediate-level college course in Chinese. Students develop their ability to communicate in real-life situations through interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication while exploring themes including family and community, identity, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.

French

French 2 continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while introducing students to increasingly complex language structures.

French 2 Honors provides an intensive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with increased emphasis on more complex syntactical patterns and written communication.

French 3 continues to strengthen listening and speaking skills while placing increased emphasis on reading, writing, and more complex structural patterns. The course culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

French 3 Honors provides an intensive study of increasingly complex grammatical concepts while strengthening students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Greater emphasis is placed on reading and writing, and the course culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

French 4 Honors provides advanced language study through the refinement of grammar and increased emphasis on reading and writing. Students explore French literature and authentic materials while continuing to develop and refine their listening and speaking skills.

French Conversation Honors emphasizes spoken communication while continuing to strengthen students' listening, reading, and writing abilities. The course gives students an opportunity to build greater confidence and fluency in conversational French and offers the opportunity to earn college credit through Adelphi University.

AP French Language and Culture provides college-level study in advanced French language and communication. Students strengthen their speaking, composition, and grammatical skills while using French for active communication and exploring topics such as the arts, current events, literature, and sports.

Spanish

Spanish 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of Spanish through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with particular emphasis on oral communication. Designed for students beginning their study of a world language at the high school level, the course builds the foundation necessary for continued Spanish study.

Spanish 2 continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while introducing increasingly complex language structures and patterns.

Spanish 2 Honors provides an intensive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with increased emphasis on more complex syntactical patterns and written communication.

Spanish 3 continues to strengthen listening and speaking skills while placing greater emphasis on reading, writing, and increasingly complex structural patterns. The course culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

Spanish Conversation Honors emphasizes spoken communication while continuing to develop students' listening, reading, and writing skills. Students have the opportunity to strengthen their conversational fluency and may earn college credit through Adelphi University.

Spanish 4 Honors provides advanced study of Spanish through refined grammatical concepts, Hispanic literature, and authentic materials. Students continue developing listening and speaking skills while strengthening reading and writing and beginning preparation aligned with the AP Spanish Language curriculum.

AP Spanish Language and Culture provides college-level study in advanced Spanish language and communication. Students strengthen their oral communication, composition, and grammatical skills while using Spanish actively to explore subjects including the arts, current events, literature, and sports.

Spanish 5 Honors Culture provides an advanced exploration of the cultures of Latin America and Spain as well as current events throughout the Hispanic world. Organized around thematic units, the course combines cultural study with continued development of both fundamental and advanced grammar. Students may have the opportunity to earn college credit.

Spanish Electives

Roslyn's Spanish electives provide students with additional opportunities to strengthen their fluency while exploring the literature, film, traditions, and contemporary cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Through discussion, storytelling, and creative projects, students use Spanish in meaningful contexts while developing greater confidence in expressing their ideas and perspectives.

Spanish Short Stories explores contemporary themes in Spanish and Latin American cultures through short stories and films. Students engage with diverse perspectives and cultural traditions while strengthening conversational fluency through discussions and creative projects.

Spanish Short Stories Advanced builds upon Spanish Short Stories through an exploration of fairy tales, myths, and legends. Students discuss universal themes such as good versus evil, love and friendship, perseverance, and overcoming challenges while strengthening their ability to communicate ideas and opinions in Spanish.

American Sign Language

Roslyn High School's American Sign Language program gives students the opportunity to explore a visual language while developing communication skills and an understanding of Deaf culture. Through a four-level sequence, students progress from foundational language skills to increasingly advanced study of ASL vocabulary, linguistics, communication, and culture.

American Sign Language 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language and provides a foundation for continued language study.

American Sign Language 2 builds upon the skills developed in ASL 1, allowing students to expand their language abilities and continue developing proficiency in American Sign Language.

American Sign Language 3 advances students' ASL skills through continued language study and development. The course builds toward greater proficiency and culminates in the Checkpoint B Examination.

American Sign Language 4 provides advanced study of American Sign Language with an emphasis on vocabulary expansion, manual and non-manual aspects of ASL, linguistics, cross-cultural communication, and cultural knowledge. Students further develop their ability to communicate while deepening their understanding of the language and culture.

English as a New Language (ENL)

ENL 1 is designed for beginning English language learners and develops foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students build vocabulary and grammatical skills through a variety of activities while exploring American culture and customs.

ENL 2 is designed for intermediate English language learners and builds upon listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students strengthen vocabulary and grammar while engaging in activities that encourage critical thinking, research, and thoughtful expression.

ENL 3 is designed for advanced English language learners and focuses on increasingly sophisticated listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Contemporary themes and integrated activities help students strengthen vocabulary and grammar while developing critical-thinking skills.

ENL Reading/Writing strengthens reading comprehension, vocabulary development, critical analysis, and written communication. Students also develop their composition skills through a structured, step-by-step approach to writing.

ENL English is designed for English language learners at the advanced to transitional level and is aligned with New York State English Language Arts Standards. Students read authentic literature across a range of genres and develop the skills to analyze, interpret, and evaluate texts in preparation for the English Regents Examination.

ENL Social Studies Workshop provides additional support for students in their social studies coursework, reinforcing key concepts while strengthening homework, study, test-taking, and project skills.

ENL Science Workshop provides additional support for students in their science coursework, reinforcing key concepts while strengthening homework, study, test-taking, and project skills.

ENL Math Workshop provides additional support for students in their mathematics coursework, reinforcing key concepts while strengthening homework, study, test-taking, and project skills.
